2018, Alaska. Collaboration with scientists at the Permafrost Lab University of Alaska Fairbanks

Five Minutes of Permafrost Thaw, Alaska 2018 depicts a thermokarst slump, a sinkhole-like formation created when ice-rich permafrost thaws and the ground collapses. 

Encountering this thawing landscape at close range marked a pivotal moment in Lindt’s practice, bringing sound into her long-established visual work and beginning her exploration of listening as a way to connect more intimately with landscapes and experience environmental change as it unfolds.

The video presents five minutes within one changing landscape while pointing toward similar processes taking place across vast northern regions. Multiplied across landscapes and continuing through time, these individual moments form part of an immense transformation. The work invites viewers to slow down and experience thaw as an active, physical process and the landscape itself as moving and changing through time rather than as a fixed or distant backdrop.
